I love history, especially family history. I also love old cook books and discovering old recipes. I especially love discovering recipes that my grandma’s made, or better yet, their mom’s!
This is one of those recipes. It came to me from my mom, who learned it from her mom, who also learned it from her mom. That’s my great- grandma! Four generations of family have made this cake!
And now that my own children are learning the recipe, we can call it a 5 generation recipe!
It is a delicious coffee cake and mixes up very quickly.
Dutch Crumb Cake
Put into a bowl:
1 c. white sugar
2 c. flour
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
Mix like a pie crust. Save out 1/2 cut for the top of the cake. To the remaining mixture add:
2 eggs
1 tsp. soda
1 c. sour milk (1 c. milk + 1 Tbs. vinegar)
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix and pour into a greased 9X13 inch cake pan.
Sprinkle with:
1/2 cup of reserved crumbs
1 c. chopped nuts (optional)
1 c. chocolate chips (optional)
Bake 350 degrees for 30 minutes until done.
